117. Unveiling the Power of Herbal Rituals for Transitioning Through the Seasons: A Journey into Ancient Practices

Updated: Oct 11

The Autumn Equinox is Sunday, Sep 22, 2024, at 8:43 AM. In Ireland, this day is called Mabon. Loughcrew Cairns is a complex of up to 30 Neolithic Passage "tombs" that were built around 2,000–3,000 BC. Cairn T is aligned with the sunrise on the spring and autumn equinoxes, marking the points in the year when day and night are equal and in balance. Stones at the entrance of the passage and the passage itself shape the sunlight into a beam that descends to a stone covered with solar symbols nestled in the back of the passageway. Watch this video to see the light moving across the backstone.

We visited these tombs in Ireland in March of 2023. (See some of the photos below.) To say it was overwhelming is an understatement! You'll also understand why I chose the spiral as my logo. :)) The spiral is a common vision experienced by those transitioning to another realm in sacred rituals/ceremonies. It also is associated with the cyclical nature of life, and the sacred feminine.

As the wheel of time turns and seasons change, our bodies and minds undergo subtle shifts as well. They beckon us to attune ourselves to the rhythms of nature. In the midst of these transitions, ancient herbal rituals offer a profound way to harmonize with the changing energies around us. Join me on a journey where we delve into the wisdom of traditional practices of my ancestors that connect us to the earth's gifts and guide us through this season's metamorphosis.

Embracing the Wisdom of Nature

In a fast-paced modern world, it's easy to lose touch with the cycles of the natural world and the innate wisdom it holds. Herbal rituals serve as a bridge, reconnecting us to the healing power of plants and their ability to support us through various stages of life. These rituals also connect us to the ancients who were versed in these traditions. Whether it's the vibrant blooms of spring, the lush greens of summer, the fiery hues of autumn, or the quiet stillness of winter, each season offers unique opportunities for growth and renewal.

Autumn: Embracing Change

When the leaves turn to gold and the air grows crisp, autumn invites us to surrender to the beauty of impermanence. In Autumn the plants begin shifting their life giving energy back into their roots. Leaves are shed and the plants prepare for winter's slumber. What appears as death above ground belies the energy and life force that continues below, leading to rebirth in the spring.

Incorporating Mugwort, Yarrow and Pine into Autumn Rituals

Herbal rituals incorporating Mugwort, Yarrow, and Pine can help us navigate this transition with grace and resilience. Creating sacred spaces infused with the scents of cedar, pine, and frankincense can also offer solace and comfort during times of change.

It is thought that Mugwort, Yarrow, and Pine held significant roles in ancient Irish and Druidic rituals, particularly during the autumn equinox. Each herb is imbued with unique properties, traditionally valued for both their medicinal benefits and symbolic meaning.

Mugwort's Symbolic Presence

Mugwort was traditionally used in rituals to enhance dreams and intuition. It was believed to offer protection during spiritual practices, particularly in dreamwork. Druidic ceremonies, during the autumn equinox, would have incorporated mugwort in offerings or burned it as incense to invoke clarity and insight. Its association with visions made it a potent companion for those reflecting on personal changes and setting intentions for the coming season. Many believe that Mugwort should be harvested just before flowering, (happening now in NYC), for its symbolic connection to both fertility and death as the plants then transition to moving their energy back into the soil in preparation for winter.

Yarrow's Multifaceted Role.

Yarrow has a rich history as a protective and healing herb. In ancient rituals, it was often associated with safeguarding against negative energies and promoting healing. During the autumn equinox, yarrow would be included in herbal baths or bundles to cleanse and protect participants as they prepare for shorter days. Using yarrow in herbal teas can also aid the immune system as winter approaches. Its continued availability in autumn makes it a fitting ingredient in seasonal celebrations, allowing practitioners to connect with the energies of the earth.

Pine for Transcendence

Pine needles symbolize resilience and longevity, making them a powerful addition to autumn rituals. While other trees lose vibrancy and leaves, pine remains vibrant and green all winter long. A symbol of purification and cleansing, the tree's needles release a strong, fresh scent that clears the mind and purifies the spirit. Burning pine needles or using pine essential oil in rituals or ceremonies is said to help release negative energy, promote healing, and release negative energy. I'll be demonstrating how to make a powerful Organic Household Cleanser using pine needles on Instagram in the upcoming week. Follow us and make sure you don't miss it.

We've created a special tea mix incorporating these herbs for use during this season. (We also sell the herbs separately and offer handmade mugwort smudges in the shop.)

Herbal rituals offer a tapestry of healing and transformation that mirrors the ever-changing seasons of our lives, reinforcing the importance of working with what the earth provides at any given time. This thoughtful approach enriches rituals and cultivates awareness of the ever-changing landscape of life itself.

As we embody these ancient practices and weave them into our daily routines, we not only deepen our connection to nature but also cultivate a profound sense of balance and harmony within ourselves. Let us embark on this sacred journey together, honoring the wisdom of the past and embracing the beauty of the present moment.

Remember, as we tread the path of herbal rituals, we walk hand in hand with the rhythms of the earth, guided by the whispers of ancient wisdom from my ancestors that have stood the test of time. May these practices illuminate your journey through the seasons, nurturing your body, mind, and soul with the boundless gifts of nature.

Let the power of herbal rituals be your compass as you navigate the changing tides of the seasons, anchoring you to the earth and guiding you on a transformative journey of healing and renewal.

Cairn T

One of the Cairns, uncovered over time. Note the spirals on this backstone. That's not blush, it was cold!
